Issues Overview

Local water infrastructure is critical to public health and safety and requires urgent reinvestment.  The crisis of lead-tainted water in Flint, MI, elevated the issue of water quality to the international stage.  It is estimated to cost at least $1 trillion over the next 25 years to restore and upgrade existing water delivery systems in the U.S.

Michigan consumers -- whether residential or business – expect to have 24-7 access to reliable, safe drinking water.  Increased water efficiency results in less usage but also less revenue for utilities to make necessary repairs.  The need to fund repairs creates pressure to raise water rates in order to sustain water delivery systems.

Aging water infrastructure - Don’t worry, but don’t wait. In other words, our water systems are safe and reliable, but at the same time, we can’t put off necessary investments in upgrades.  The U.S. has more than 1 million miles of drinking water infrastructure.  The average age of the nation’s water pipes is 47 years, and many are 75 years or older in large cities.  About 237,600 water main breaks occur each year – 700 a day.  We lose approximately 2 trillion gallons of water each year to faulty, leaking pipes.  Given our aging infrastructure, MI-AWWA is focused on asset management.

Water infrastructure is critical to the local economy and quality of life in communities across Michigan and needs to be maintained.  Water fuels manufacturing, energy production and transporting goods around the globe.  One-fifth of the U.S. economy would grind to a halt without a reliable and clean source of water.*  If drinking water cost as much as soda pop, we’d pay 1,000 percent more than we generally do.

AWWA is leading the advancement of water knowledge, promoting the value of water and the impact is has in our lives.
