Utilities/Public Works Director Position
The Township of Scio is a general law township with a population of approximately 20,000. The Township is located on the west side of Ann Arbor in Washtenaw County and is seeking a Utilities/Public Works Director. This position is under the supervision and oversight of the Township Manager and would include the following responsibilities:
- Supervision of day-to-day operations of the Utilities Department, Groundskeeping Department, and associated staff.
- Maintenance and repair of the existing water distribution and wastewater collection systems, associated residential and commercial services, as well as utility facilities (water booster stations, Pressure reducing valve, water storage tank, wastewater pump stations, an oxygen injection system, etc.).
- Development and administration of Capital Improvement Plans and Initiatives.
- Development and administration of Utility and Groundskeeping Department policies as well as oversight of grounds and building maintenance for the Township Hall and associated Township properties (booster station, pump stations, pathways, etc.).
- Provision of leadership and direction in the development of short-term and long-term Township Utility Planning initiatives including and not limited to coordination of water reliability studies and maser planning.
- Additional responsibilities may be required upon request of the Township Manager and/or other Township staff.
- Coordination and communication with the City of Ann Arbor who supplies drinking water and treat wastewater for the township as well as communication with the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).
The preferred candidate shall meet the following requirements for the position:
- Education and Licensing:
*Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

- Associate degree and/or equivalent education and experience. A Bachelor’s degree is desired, but not required.

- Current S1 Operator’s License
Five or more years of progressively responsible work in public works or a related field, including significant supervisory responsibilities.
- A valid State of Michigan driver’s license and satisfactory driving record, and the ability to maintain these throughout employment.
- Considerable knowledge of industry standards, policies, and practices of department administration.
- Working knowledge of government finance, as well as maintenance and repairs of water and wastewater distribution and collection systems.
- Ability to prepare, present and analyze comprehensive reports and oversee multiple projects to completion.
- Experience managing projects and personnel for efficient and effective performance.
- Regularly attend township Board Meetings and Planning Commission Meetings as needed.
