DPW Worker
Compensation: Hourly pay of $25.95, plus overtime opportunities
(W/Excellent Fringe Benefits as well as a MERS Defined Benefit Pension)
Position Responsibilities:
- Maintain Water Distribution/Wastewater Treatment Plant (Lagoon System) and DPW operations. This position reports to the DPW Director. This role is covered under The Government Employees Labor Council.
Position Requirements:
- Operates a variety of heavy trucks and equipment in the repair, maintenance and construction of public works water, sanitary sewer.
- Maintains the sanitary sewer systems, including maintaining and repairing lift stations and retention ponds.
- Maintains the supply and distribution of the water system, including maintaining and repairing water main breaks, the water reservoir, PRVs, hydrants, valves and curb boxes.
- Maintains and installs water meters/radio readers and performs water shut offs and turn-ons.
- Maintains all buildings and property owned by the township that includes mowing and repairs as needed.
- Inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment, repairs as needed and reports any malfunctions to supervisor.
- Assists with the preparations and tear down/cleanup for events, festivals and special functions.
- Maintains the ability to respond 24 hours a day 365 days a year to emergency situations in all types of weather conditions.
- Assists with snow plowing and ice control functions.
- Maintains safety awareness of those policies directly related to the utilities and DPW operation, including trenching and shoring and confined space entry.
- Maintains an awareness of safety principles and applies them in the work environment.
- Performs utility locating in response to Miss Dig requests and to maintain the GIS inventory.
- Perform duties required in burials that includes opening and closings and selling of plots.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Water and Wastewater experience is desired.
- High School Diploma or equivalent/Associate’s degree preferred.
- Background in math and chemistry preferred.
- CDL License B with an air brake endorsement preferred.
- Clean driving record required.
- GIS experience preferred.
- Must have a State of Michigan S4 water license and or a State of Michigan Class D wastewater license.
- Ability to work in a team environment, follow safe work practices, communicate verbally and in writing, and demonstrate excellence in customer service.
- Must be available for overtime as needed.

Equipment - Desktop computer, Microsoft Office software, calculator, printers, copiers, scanners, telephone and others.
- Ability to operate equipment and machinery such as heavy trucks, end loaders, excavating equipment, and hand and power tools.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical that includes drug screen and hearing test.
- Ability to bend, kneel, crawl, climb, lift 50 lbs., and run. Mental capacity to analyze data, use logic and sound judgement.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and tolerate various weather conditions.

The duties of this job are performed mainly outside with some work inside customers’ homes for meter installations etc.
