About the Role
The Sheboygan Water Utility located in Sheboygan, Wisconsin is seeking a motivated and detail oriented Water Treatment Plant Operator to join our operations team. This position plays a critical role in producing and delivering safe, high-quality drinking water to our customers by operating and maintaining our 34 MGD surface water treatment facility and remote pumping stations. Working under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Operator monitors and adjusts treatment processes, operates complex mechanical and electrical systems, and ensures regulatory compliance across all aspects of water treatment and distribution. Key Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor, and control treatment processes including coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and UV disinfection.
- Utilize SCADA systems to monitor system performance and respond to alarms and operational changes.
- Adjust chemical feed rates and treatment techniques based on water quality data and system demand.
- Perform laboratory analyses to verify compliance with DNR and EPA standards.
- Inspection, maintenance, and repair pumps, valves, and instrumentation.
- Operate and maintain booster stations and elevated water storage tanks.
- Record operational data and maintain detailed plant logs and reports.
- Assist with water main flushing, system/facility maintenance, and emergency response.
Participate in rotating shifts including weekends and holiday assignments.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; candidates must hold or be actively enrolled in an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) program in Water/Wastewater Technology, Environmental Technology, or a related science field.
- Wisconsin DNR Surface Water Certification required within six (6) months of employment.
- Experience in water treatment operations, pump stations, or distribution systems preferred.
- Basic understanding of SCADA, electrical, and mechanical systems related to water treatment.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and commitment to safety.
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license with a good driving record required.
Schedule and Work Environment
This position requires rotating shift work (1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts), including weekends and holidays. Work involves exposure to chemicals, confined spaces, noise, and mechanical equipment in an industrial setting. Physical demands include standing, walking, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Compensation & Benefits
- Full-Time starting hourly wage is $33.32 with step increases after 6, 12, and 18 months.

About the Utility
The Sheboygan Water Utility is a public utility providing safe, high-quality drinking water to approximately 49,000 residents through 18,800 metered connections. The Utility operates a conventional surface water treatment facility drawing from Lake Michigan, supported by booster stations, elevated tanks, and over 200 miles of distribution piping.
