Certified Operator Services LLC is seeking a motivated, reliable Wastewater Treatment Operator (Class C or higher) to serve in a Lead Operator / Operator in Charge (OIC) role supporting municipal wastewater operations in Southwest Michigan. Position Overview

This position will serve as the Operator in Charge (OIC) for assigned facilities, with responsibility for day-to-day operations, regulatory compliance, and overall system performance.

This is a hands-on leadership role — we’re looking for someone who takes ownership, leads by example, and is actively engaged in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee daily wastewater treatment operations
  • Develop and implement procedures to ensure the efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of WWTP equipment.
  • Operates and maintains all plant processes, pumps, conveyors, blowers, chlorinates, thickening/de-watering equipment used to process wastewater and its side streams. Observes variations in operating conditions, interpret meter/gauge reading, and make appropriate settings and adjustments. Cleans, collects, and removes accumulated grit, sludge, trash, grease, or other process-related residual material from all areas of the facility. Perform sampling, lab analysis, and process control adjustments
  • Collects samples of sludge, and/or wastewater for testing. May conduct tests on wastewater samples. Takes readings, submit reports, maintain logs, and keep records on gauges, charts, flow meters and other plant processes/equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with EGLE and NPDES permit requirements
  • Complete and review logs, reports, and regulatory documentation
  • Identify operational issues and implement corrective actions
  • Coordinate and support preventative maintenance activities
  • Coordinate IPP Sampling, inspections, compliance reviews, and reporting
  • Participate in on-call rotation and emergency response 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Michigan Class C Wastewater Operator Certification
  • 4+ years of experience in WWTP operations
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work independently
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, technical skills, mechanical reasoning, and problem-solving abilities. (e.g., automotive repair, HVAC, plumbing, machining, welding, or similar trades).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends, and holidays, with availability for on-call emergency duties on a rotating 3-week basis
  • Ability to perform physical work, both indoor and outdoor, in all weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Michigan Class B WWTP Operator Certification
  • Industrial Maltreatment Program management
  • Familiarity with compliance reporting and regulatory interaction
  • Familiarity with land application of biosolids  
  • Electrical or mechanical maintenance experience
Compensation & Benefits
  • $30–$38/hour (depending on experience and certification)
