Position Responsibilities

There is an opening for Field Supervisor at Genesee County Water and Waste Services in Flint, MI.   Duties include:  Supervising the day-to-day field activities related to the operation, maintenance and repair of the Division’s water distribution and/or sanitary sewer systems assuring compliance with related public health and safety requirements.


Position Requirements

  • Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license and qualify to drive a Division vehicle in compliance with the Division Driver Policy.
  • High school diploma plus completion of a skilled trades program or equivalent training in water distribution and sewer collection, process control, and pump maintenance/repair practices. Associates degree in related field is preferred.
  • Four to six years of related public utility operations and maintenance experience including supervisory responsibilities or equivalent training/coursework as approved by the Division.
  • EGLE S-3 Water Distribution operator license and Sacramento Water Distribution System Operation and Maintenance certificate. If a specified license or certification is required for a position as listed in this job description the Division may at their discretion allow the incumbent to enter into the position without the required license or certification contingent that the license or certification be obtained within one year of starting the position. If the license or certification is not obtained within that year the employee will be frozen at their current pay step until such time as the license or certification is obtained.  
  • A valid State of Michigan commercial driver’s license (CDL) B is preferred (with Air Brakes and Tanker or “N” endorsement).
  • Supervisory skills necessary to provide guidance, training and review the work of assigned staff and contractors.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, external contractors, vendors, customers, and the general public in the exchange of information. The incumbent is also required to handle problem situations in a tactful, courteous and respectful manner.
  • Analytical ability and mechanical aptitude to develop plans of action to address a variety of water and/or sewer system problems in a cost-effective and timely manner.
  • Written and computer skills necessary to prepare required documentation.
  • Experience with City Works, SCADA and Microsoft Office preferred or must be able to demonstrate aptitude or proficiency after six months.
  • Mental ability to adapt and respond to multiple priorities and demands and handle pressures related to emergency/ problem situations.
  • Physical ability to conduct work station/site inspections and/or perform system maintenance/repair tasks. The incumbent is also required to transport items weighing up to 75 pounds and properly operate required tools and equipment.
