Professional Bio
Cheryl Porter is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Water and Field Services at Great Lakes Water Authority in Detroit, Michigan.
Her career in the water sector began in 1996 as a chemist for the City of Detroit Water and Sewerage Department and elevated to COO by 2014. Since joining AWWA in 2005, Cheryl has been an active volunteer with AWWA and the Michigan Section of AWWA on various committees and has assumed leadership roles such as the MI-AWWA Board Trustee, AWWA Director-at-Large and AWWA Vice President Board roles.
In January 2023, Cheryl was elected by the AWWA Board of Directors to the role of AWWA Incoming President-Elect. Her presidential term runs from June 2024 to June 2025.
Cheryl holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Michigan, a Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, and an MBA with a concentration in Human Resources from Madonna University.
