mentorship
GROW THE PROFESSION. PAY IT FORWARD. FIND YOUR GUIDE.
Michigan’s water sector has always run on the knowledge passed from one generation of professionals to the next. MI-AWWA’s Mentorship Program is being built to formalize that tradition, creating intentional connections between experienced water professionals and those who are earlier in their journey.
Whether you have decades of expertise to share or you’re looking for someone to help you navigate your next steps, this program is designed for you.

Program Details Coming Soon
We’re currently developing the structure of the MI-AWWA Mentorship Program, and we want to hear from the community as we build it. The program is designed to be flexible, accommodating short-term, project-based mentorship, long-term career development relationships, and everything in between.
What Mentorship Can Look Like
Mentorship in the water sector doesn’t have to mean a formal, year-long commitment. The MI-AWWA Mentorship Program will support a range of relationship styles, including:
- Short-term, goal-based mentorship, focused on a specific exam, career transition, or skill area
- Long-term career development relationships, for ongoing guidance as you grow in the profession
- Peer mentorship, connecting professionals at similar career stages across different utilities or disciplines
Mentorship connections may focus on any area of the Water and Wastewater Competency Model, including:
- Personal effectiveness, professionalism, and workplace skills (Tiers 1–3)
- Industry knowledge, regulations, and safety fundamentals (Tier 4)
- Technical operations, treatment, distribution, field work, public health, and more (Tier 5)
