UNDERSTANDING PFAS AND MICHIGAN'S RESPONSE

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of human-made chemicals that have been used in manufacturing and consumer products for decades because of their resistance to heat, water, and oil. Due to their persistence in the environment, PFAS have become an important focus for drinking water systems, regulators, researchers, and communities across Michigan and the nation.

MI-AWWA is committed to supporting water professionals by providing educational resources, sharing regulatory updates, and promoting collaboration as utilities work to address PFAS and protect public health.

What Are PFAS?

PFAS are a large family of synthetic chemicals found in many everyday products and industrial applications. Because they do not readily break down in the environment, they are often referred to as "forever chemicals."

These compounds may be found in products such as:

  • Non-stick cookware
  • Water-resistant fabrics
  • Food packaging
  • Firefighting foam
  • Industrial manufacturing processes

While many uses of certain PFAS have changed over time, their persistence in the environment continues to present challenges for water systems throughout the country.

Protecting drinking water remains the highest priority for water utilities.

Water systems across Michigan routinely monitor water quality and work closely with state and federal agencies to comply with drinking water regulations.
